If you own a pool here, you know the chlorine routine. Buying tablets or liquid. Storing it safely, away from children and away from the sun. Dosing by hand. Testing. Adjusting. Hoping the balance holds.
It works. But across eighteen years of working with pools throughout this region, we have watched most of our long-standing clients abandon it. What they moved to was salt chlorination, and the reasons are worth understanding.
A salt chlorinator is installed in the pool's pipework, after the filter. It takes the salt dissolved in the water and converts it to chlorine by electrolysis. It does not take much salt either: the concentration sits at 3 to 5 grams per litre, roughly six times less than seawater. Most people cannot taste it.
The chlorine does its work, neutralising bacteria and algae, then reverts to salt. The cycle begins again. You add salt once at installation and top it up occasionally through the season to make up for splash-out and backwashing. That is more or less the extent of your involvement.
Why does the Algarve change the equation for chlorine?
Because chlorine degrades far faster here. Ultraviolet intensity is brutal, temperatures above 30°C accelerate algae growth, and a pool that held its balance all week in Surrey will burn through its chlorine in two days in July near Loulé. That comparison is the one that surprises arrivals from northern Europe most.
Then there is the swing in bather load. Holiday rental properties bring unpredictable numbers, four guests one week and twelve the next, and many owners are not in Portugal all year, so nobody is on site to notice when the water starts to turn.
Salt chlorination handles those pressures on its own. The system generates chlorine at a steady, programmable rate tied to the filtration schedule, and it makes no difference whether you are in Vilamoura or back in London. Clients who have switched all tell us the same thing: fewer chemistry problems, fewer green-pool emergencies, less corrective work. That is not a sales line, it is what we see on the ground.
Steady chlorine matters for more than convenience. Keeping free chlorine and pH in their proper ranges is what actually stops waterborne illness spreading in a pool (CDC, Healthy Swimming), and a system that holds those ranges without anyone remembering to dose is doing something a bucket of tablets cannot.
Which salt chlorinator do we install, and why?
We fit the Hidrolife range from Sugar Valley, manufactured in Spain. We have tried other brands over the years and this is the one we settled on, for concrete reasons of build and of support.
The units use self-cleaning titanium electrolytic cells and carry a removable 4.3 inch colour touchscreen. Integrated sensors monitor gas levels and water flow. Chlorine output runs from 8 to 50 grams per hour depending on the model, so there is a correctly sized unit for almost any residential pool.
What convinced us, though, is how the Hidrolife centralises everything. Chlorine production, pH regulation, filtration timing and pool lighting are all managed from one device. With the optional Wi-Fi module it connects to the Poolwatch app, published by Hayward, Sugar Valley's parent company, which gives you full remote control from your phone. Does a salt chlorinator pay for itself?
It does, though not immediately. The equipment costs more up front than a tub of tablets, and nobody pretends otherwise. What changes the arithmetic is the running cost: pool salt is among the cheapest products you can buy, and chlorine stopped being cheap several years ago.
A fire at BioLab’s plant in Westlake, Louisiana, in August 2020 took a large share of American chlorine tablet production out of the market, at the same time as pandemic pool building was pushing demand the other way. Supply chain problems and the energy cost of chlorine production kept prices elevated for years afterwards (Pool Magazine, November 2024). Pool salt was never caught up in any of it, and what an owner pays at retail for tablets, in the quantities a local shop sells, reflects all of that.
A typical pool needs an initial charge of salt at installation, then small top-ups each season. The annual salt cost for most of our clients is a fraction of what they previously spent on chlorine products. Run the numbers across three to five years and the system pays for itself, and after that the saving compounds.
There is a less obvious saving too. Pools on salt hold a more stable chemistry, which means fewer emergency call-outs, less acid spent correcting pH, and less water wasted on partial drains, which in a region with recurring water restrictions is not a small detail.
What does the water actually feel like?
Softer, and this is the part that surprises people. The chlorine level in a salt pool is lower and steadier than in a hand-dosed one, and the dissolved salt gives the water a softness you can feel on your skin. Swimmers get out without that tight, dry feeling. Eyes do not sting. Hair does not go brittle.
The salt concentration is roughly that of a human teardrop. Nobody would call it salty. What you notice is water that feels clean without feeling chemical. Families with young children often tell us this is what first made them consider salt, and that the savings, the convenience and the automation arrived afterwards as a bonus.
Swimwear lasts longer too, incidentally.
What difference does salt chlorination make environmentally?
We are pool people rather than environmental scientists, so we will stay with what we see. A salt chlorinator means you stop buying manufactured chlorine products: no more plastic containers or steel drums, no more hazardous goods deliveries, no more chemical waste to dispose of.
It is not zero impact. The cell draws electricity, and salt has to be produced and transported. But the reduction in packaging, transport and manufactured chemicals accumulates across the years a system is in service, and that part is observable without needing a study to prove it.
What should you consider before switching?
Two practical points, neither of them a dealbreaker. Dissolved salt is mildly corrosive to certain metals over time, and the electrolytic cell is a wear part with a finite life. Both are manageable if you know about them up front, which is why we put them on the table before selling anyone anything.
Ladders, handrails and heat pump exchangers should be marine grade or properly protected. We check this during the survey and advise accordingly.
As for the cell, it lasts several years, and the replacement cost is typically covered several times over by the chemical savings across the same period. Even so, it is better to know now than to discover it later.
Salt chlorination works well for most residential pools in this region. It suits holiday rentals particularly, because the automation takes the uncertainty out of every changeover, and it suits families who value softer water.
